We love refurbishing Chickering pianos for two reasons; they are America’s oldest home-grown piano manufacturer, and no two models are ever alike. Chickering was always innovating and experimenting with its visual and sonic aesthetics. The aged mahogany case of this piano has the distinctive look of American woodcraft from the pre-war era and the smooth wear of the black keys suggests that this piano indeed has a story to tell.
We revitalized the old action of this Chickering with new hammers, shanks, and flanges, then added a whole set of new strings and new dampers. Just for aesthetic appeal, we also refinished the plate and completed our restoration with a tuning and regulation to concert specs.
After regulation and upgrades, the touch is medium-light and ready for a professional player. The bass register sings and sustains for around thirty-four to thirty-six seconds with a mezzo-forte stroke of a key. The tenor register is round and full and the treble is crystal clear and bell-like. All-in-all this piano is a pleasure to play.
At onetime the largest piano manufacturer in the US, the Chickering name predates Steinway by 30 years. Chickering was founded in 1823 in Boston Massachusetts. P.T. Barnum commissioned a Chickering for the US tour of Opera singer Jenny Lind (the “Swedish Nightingale”).
*AMC Certified Rebuilt Pianos include new hammers, shanks and flanges, new strings and felt, tuning, voicing and action regulation. All brass has been polished to like-new or has been replaced.
